"Is Dermaplaning Right for You? Benefits & Cautions for Acne-Prone Skin"
So, let’s start by discussing what dermaplaning is.
Dermaplaning is a method of physical exfoliation, that means it physical removes skin cells off the top layer of skin. Other methods of physical exfoliation you might be familiar with are facial or body scrubs, cleansing brushes, exfoliating mitts etc. In a dermaplaning treatment, your provider will use a surgical blade designed for dermaplaning, making movements around your face, collecting dead skin cells and any vellus hair commonly known as “peach fuzz” off the top layer of your skin. A common fear when people are considering dermaplaning, is that their facial hair will come back thicker, or darker. I understand that worry, but no your hair will come back the same density and color its was prior to the treatment. So, all “peach fuzz” will stay the light fine hair it was, if you do have the random dark, coarser hair that will stay the same as well. Warning you might get used to how your skin felt post dermaplaning so 4 weeks later you might notice your facial hair has returned, but it is really only noticeable to you! This is not a treatment you have to keep up with, but you might want to!
Now, when would I recommend a client receive this treatment.
If they have a healthy skin barrier overall, no active acne lesions, and would benefit from us removing the dead skin cells to allow hydrating and other beneficial skincare ingredients better penetration deeper with the excess dead skin cells removed. I encourage my clients to be dermaplaned before any special event, for instance a wedding, when they need their makeup to be at its best, but only if the skin can handle it.
So, when it comes to my kindred spirit acne prone clients.
I do not recommend this method of exfoliation while we are working together to clear your acne. It is not worth the potential spread of bacteria. I know having that top layer of peach fuzz removed is so tempting, but trust me, its not worth delaying healing or triggering more breakouts while you are trying to get your acne under control. Do not worry, there are other methods of exfoliating we will utilize that will be beneficial. Once your acne is managed, if you would like to have a dermaplane treatment, I would love to do one then for you!
